Executor checklist

Safe clearing

Have a knowledgeable person confirm every firearm is unloaded before handling, photographing, or transporting it.

NFA items

Machine guns, suppressors, short-barreled rifles or shotguns need the decedent's ATF paperwork and an ATF Form 5 transfer. Do not sell or surrender them without it.

Interstate transfers

Heirs in another state generally receive handguns through a licensed dealer (FFL) in their home state. Check state law before shipping.

Prohibited persons

Anyone barred from possessing firearms must not take custody, even temporarily.

Tax basis

Inherited property is usually valued as of the date of death. Ask the estate's attorney or CPA whether a qualified appraisal is required.
